Purpose of the Department
The primary aim of the department is to educate qualified foreign language teachers specializing in German, French, and English language teaching who are capable of working across various levels of the education system. The department seeks to equip prospective teachers with both strong disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical competence, enabling them to implement instructional practices aligned with contemporary educational approaches.
Major Courses Offered in the Department
Within the programme, students take courses designed to develop their proficiency in the target language according to their specific division. These courses include oral and written expression, phonetics, grammar, text analysis and reading, translation studies, and courses related to the literature of the relevant language. In addition, the curriculum incorporates professional teaching courses such as educational psychology, general and specific teaching methods, assessment and evaluation, and guidance and counselling. Practical training components are also included to help students strengthen their professional teaching skills.
Required Qualifications
Prospective students who wish to study in foreign language teacher education programmes are expected to possess strong verbal abilities and good memory skills, as well as a genuine interest and motivation to learn foreign languages. An interest in literature and the academic capacity to succeed in the field of language learning and teaching are also considered important. Throughout the programme, students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching experience through pedagogical formation courses.
Degrees Awarded and Professional Responsibilities of Graduates
Graduates who successfully complete the department are awarded the title of “German Language Teacher,” “French Language Teacher,” or “English Language Teacher,” depending on their field of specialization. In their professional roles, they aim to help students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to the target language in accordance with the relevant national curricula. They design appropriate learning environments, assess students’ progress, implement strategies to support learning outcomes, and follow developments in their field in order to integrate them into their teaching practices.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of foreign language teacher education programmes may work in a wide range of educational settings, from preschool institutions to higher education establishments within both public and private sectors. They may also find employment in institutions that provide adult education, language courses, and various educational organisations. As global communication increasingly requires competence in foreign languages, language education has become a significant necessity at both national and international levels. Consequently, graduates of the department benefit from diverse employment opportunities.
Vision
The department’s vision is to train foreign language teachers who can keep pace with contemporary educational developments, possess well-developed research skills, and demonstrate reflective and critical thinking. Another goal is to develop programmes and resources aligned with European Union standards, foster an understanding of the importance of language in intercultural communication, and educate teacher candidates to effectively integrate technology into educational contexts. Furthermore, the department aims to cultivate creative, self-confident teachers who can work both collaboratively and independently.
Mission
The mission of the department is to adopt a holistic approach that emphasises not only instruction but also broader education. In line with this perspective, the programme aims to instil ethical values in students, promote learning-to-learn skills, enhance linguistic and cultural awareness, and develop a strong sense of responsibility. It also seeks to strengthen teacher candidates’ practical teaching competencies through collaboration with schools, improve the quality of undergraduate and graduate education, and increase both the quantity and quality of scientific research conducted at national and international levels.
